Overview

Literature, being an essential component of culture, is at the core of every nation‘s development and identity formation. It is a key manifestation of the spirit of humanity, without which it ceases to function as the ultimate form of creation. Literature is a basic source for the sustenance of morality and a spontaneous realization of the aesthetic potentiality of man through systematic training in creativity. The MA Literature is delivered through lectures, course works, and end-of-semester examinations. The coursework and course units will be delivered using several methods like the lecture method, discussion/brainstorming method, writing reflective essays and critical articles/book reviews, Powerpoint presentations, Field Study Tours, presentations and graduate seminars/workshops and microteaching. The dissertation is the final requirement for the award of the MA Literature Degree. The programme objectives are to acquire the theoretical knowledge and practical skills needed to attain professional competence in the literary scholarship; to provide critical insights for appreciation of literature, art and culture within the spheres of development and social change and to provide students with critical talent so as to see them operate as literary scholars.

Entry Requirements

Ugandan Applicants

  • Applicants must hold at least a Second Class (BA or BEd. Arts) Degree in Literature from a recognized University or equivalent qualification from other recognized institutions of higher learning.
  • In exceptional cases, holders of pass degrees may be admitted to the Programme provided such applicants have studied Literature as an option and can demonstrate academic growth and show evidence of relevant work experience.

International Applicants

Students whose language of instruction was not in English must have an International English language test system (IELTS) or Test of English as a foreign language (TOEFL) certificate with an overall score of 7.0, or be able to demonstrate an equivalent level. Applicants will also be required to submit a 1500 word essay.
