There is an increasing demand for business management and administration specialists worldwide and Uganda in particular at the Doctoral level. This programme aims at producing specialists in different fields of business management and administration through a more flexible learning approach. The programme has been designed to assist in the development of business and management skills in Uganda and to improve on the quality of human resource for business and non-business in areas of management.  The programme is also consistent with the legal mandate of Kabale University as provided for in its charter, which requires the University to develop curricula and offer higher education scientific and technological courses, to award Postgraduate degrees in various specializations. [cm_show_info] Whereas the stiff competition in the business sector calls for development of a human capital base equipped with managerial competences to deal with the National, Regional, Africa and Worldwide trends of contemporary business, there is a remarkable increase in the demand of managerial skills in the wake of liberalized economies, elsewhere in developing countries. This in turn has created a need for managers who are capable of handling the emerging challenges and opportunities. Our graduates will play a key role in achieving Vision 2040 which is conceptualized around strengthening the fundamentals of the national economy to harness the opportunities around the country. The PhD in Business Administration programme by Coursework and Research consists of five options notably; Business Administration, Finance, Strategic management, Entrepreneurship & Innovations, and Procurement and Logistics Management integrates the academic and research rigor with professional and corporate undertakings. Students are given the opportunity to develop knowledge and understanding of the conceptual and practical aspects of Business Administration, which can spearhead Organizations’ sustainability and excellence. The programme therefore seeks to consider the relevance of the 21st Century skills in the development paradigm shifts within the manufacturers association demands for a lot of inputs that would respond to Industries expectations from the graduates once recruited as employees. Knowledge and skills gap in industries that have been considered and the methodology of teaching will be related to the industries ways of service delivery. The objectives of the PhD in Business Administration by Coursework and Research programme are the following:
  • To provide advanced knowledge and theory in Business Administration.
  • To enhance learners’ capacity for participation in, and application of theory and practice of business administration in social and economic development.
  • To impart research and innovation skills to learners to meet the ever-increasing demands of the 21st Century industry and business environment.
  • To impart critical thinking and analytical skills for effective and efficient decision making.
The PhD in Business Administration shall take a minimum of three (3) years and a maximum of Five (5) years. The programme consists of Course works, Examinations and Research and all courses are compulsory to all students. Entry Requirements

Applicants to the PhD programmes must meet the general requirements for admission to Graduate Programmes set by National Council for Higher Education (NCHE) and Kabale University. Specially, applicants must possess the following:

An admissible applicant should meet the following criteria:

  • Master’s degree from a recognized University and/or Institution of Higher Learning in a field relevant to Business Administration.
  • Any other Master’s degree that may not be relevant but the applicant must have evidence of published materials relevant or related to the field.
  • Evidence of Recognition of Prior Learning that is equivalent to the qualification that is to be pursued. For Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL), a prospective candidate shall first get clearance from NCHE to be eligible for admission.
  • An application letter.
  • A detailed and updated Curriculum Vitae.
  • Three recommendation letters signed at least by two academics at a PhD level or higher, and one professional referee.
  • A Concept Paper should be at least 2 pages and not be more than 10 pages, double-spaced.
